一、导语:两条主线与一个核心制度
When recruiting overseas editorial board members for STEM journals, experts primarily come from two types of institutions: (1) teaching and research staff at universities, and (2) researchers at national laboratories and specialized research institutes. Understanding their titles requires grasping a core system—the Tenure track and its pre-tenure phase (Tenure Track).
Unlike China's "Teaching Assistant–Lecturer–Associate Professor–Professor" rank system, research universities overseas—particularly in the U.S.—typically begin by offering a fixed-term Tenure Track position. At the end of this period, candidates undergo a rigorous review: those who pass are granted Tenure and hired permanently; those who do not must leave. Knowing which track an expert is on—and whether they have earned Tenure—is key to assessing their academic standing.
二、基础概念
(一)学位与博士后
In the sciences, the foundational degree is the PhD (Doctor of Philosophy), signifying systematic research training and original contributions. A postdoc is not a degree but a research position held after earning a doctorate and before securing an independent faculty role, typically working under the mentorship of senior professors as part of a career transition phase.
(二)Tenure Track 与 Tenure
Tenure Track refers to the "pathway to tenure." Employees in this track must demonstrate excellence in research, teaching, and service during a probationary period of approximately six to seven years. Upon successful review, they are granted tenure—a long-term employment guarantee that cannot be terminated except for cause under applicable law. Positions outside this track, such as teaching-focused, research-only, or part-time roles, typically do not offer this protection.
(三)教职与行政职务的区别
Academic Rank (e.g., Assistant Professor, Associate Professor, Full Professor) refers to an individual's academic position. Administrative Title (e.g., Department Chair, Dean, President) denotes a management role, typically held by tenured professors on fixed-term appointments; incumbents return to their academic rank upon completion of the term. The two concepts must not be conflated.
(四)PI 与学术称呼
A Principal Investigator (PI) is the individual ultimately responsible for a research project and its funding. It is a role, not a fixed academic title. At U.S. research universities, even newly hired Assistant Professors typically serve as independent PIs to secure funding and supervise graduate students. Do not confuse "Assistant Professor" with China's "Teaching Assistant."
三、美国高校教职体系
(一)终身教职轨道的三级
Assistant Professor is an entry-level Tenure Track position, typically held before earning tenure. Candidates undergo evaluation during a six- to seven-year "tenure clock." Successful candidates are promoted to Associate Professor and granted tenure. Further promotion to Full Professor requires additional years of service and a separate independent review, with the expectation of achieving national or international leadership in the field.
(二)入门与非终身教职岗位
In addition to Tenure Track, common positions include Postdoc, Instructor (a transitional teaching role), Lecturer (teaching-focused, typically non-tenure and research-light), and Adjunct (part-time, often with primary employment outside the institution). Research-track roles such as Research Scientist, Research Assistant/Associate, and Full Professor also exist; these are primarily funded by research grants and generally do not offer tenure.
(三)荣誉讲席
Distinguished Professor is the highest institutional honor, awarded to a select few top scholars. Endowed or Named Chairs are established through donor endowments and typically held by senior full professors, symbolizing academic prestige and resources.
(四)行政职务序列
The academic administrative hierarchy, from lowest to highest, generally includes: Department Chair/Head (typically appointed for three to five years), Dean, Provost (the university's chief academic officer), and President or Chancellor (titles vary by institution). These are management roles, not academic ranks above professor.
四、英国高校教职体系
UK university academic ranks, from lowest to highest, are: Lecturer, Senior Lecturer/Reader, and Professor. A permanent Lecturer position is equivalent to an Assistant Professor in the US; Senior Lecturers and Readers roughly correspond to Associate Professors. In many institutions, these two roles run parallel, with Readers placing greater emphasis on research achievements. The rank of Professor is the highest, reserved for a select few with exceptionally high standards.
In recent years, some UK institutions have adopted titles closer to those in the US, such as Associate Professor. A Named Professor is equivalent to an Endowed Chair in the US. When evaluating experts in the UK, pay special attention to the scarcity of the Professor title; holders are typically leaders in their fields.
五、德国高校教职体系
In Germany, professors are classified into salary grades W1, W2, and W3. W1 refers to Junior Professors, who typically hold fixed-term positions and represent an early path to independence. W2 and W3 denote full professors, with W3 being the highest rank. The traditional route requires completing a habilitation thesis and obtaining venia legendi (the right to teach), after which one is appointed as Privatdozent (PD)—a lecturer with teaching qualifications but no professorial chair. Additionally, non-professor civil service academic roles exist, such as Akademischer Rat (Academic Councilor).
六、法国高校与科研机构体系
University faculty ranks range from Maître de conférences (MCF, Associate Professor) to Professeur des universités (PR, Full Professor). Positions are filled through national competitive examinations and carry civil servant status.
At research institutions such as France's National Centre for Scientific Research (CNRS), the research ranks are Chargé de recherche (CR, Researcher) and Directeur de recherche (DR, Senior Research Director). While university faculty positions can roughly correspond to these research ranks, they belong to separate employment systems.
七、日本高校教职体系
In Japanese universities, academic ranks from lowest to highest are: Assistant (助教), Lecturer (講師), Associate Professor (准教授), and Professor (教授). In 2007, Japan revised the School Education Act, renaming "Assistant Professor" (助教授) to "Associate Professor" (准教授) and reforming the "Assistant" (助手) system into the current "Assistant" (助教) role. Note that the historical "Assistant" (助手) was a junior research support position, distinct from today's independent teaching and research-focused "Assistant" (助教). Be cautious when reviewing older documents to distinguish between the two.
八、澳大利亚与新西兰高校教职体系
Australian and New Zealand university academic positions are classified from Level A to Level E: Level A is Associate Lecturer, Level B is Lecturer, Level C is Senior Lecturer, Level D is Associate Professor/Reader, and Level E is Professor. These levels correspond to the national unified university salary framework, offering a clear hierarchy for easy reference.
九、科研院所与独立研究机构
(一)美国国立卫生研究院(NIH)
In the NIH Intramural Research Program (IRP), a Stadtman Tenure-Track Investigator is equivalent to an Assistant Professor on the tenure track at a university, typically undergoing a six-year review period (eight years for clinical or epidemiological research). Upon successful evaluation, they are granted tenure and promoted to Senior Investigator, with independent staffing, funding, and space allocated by the institution. Associate Investigators follow research or clinical tracks similar to those in academia but are not part of the tenure system.
(二)德国马普学会(Max Planck)
Independent Research Group Leaders at the Max Planck Institute are hired under W2 salary scales, comparable to university assistant or associate professor levels. They lead independent research groups on fixed-term contracts, with continuation subject to evaluation. The highest rank is Director and Scientific Member, who typically also hold an honorary professorship at a university.
(三)国家实验室与研究所的共同规律
Most national laboratories and research institutes typically have roles such as PI/Group Leader and Staff Scientist. When evaluating, focus on whether the individual is an independent PI with control over their own funding and team, rather than relying solely on their job title.
(四)学会会士:荣誉而非职位
STEM fields feature numerous honorary titles, such as IEEE Fellow (Fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, elected from no more than 1/1000 of voting members annually), APS Fellow (American Physical Society Fellow), and EMBO Member (Member of the European Molecular Biology Organization). These honors recognize academic achievements and are used as post-nominal suffixes; they do not alter one's actual rank or constitute an administrative position.
十、易混头衔辨析与实务建议
Emeritus/Emerita denotes a retired title; Adjunct indicates part-time faculty based outside the institution; Visiting refers to short-term appointments; Honorary signifies an honorary appointment, typically without salary or contractual obligations; Research titles usually follow project-based tracks. Recognize that these prefixes do not indicate formal, tenured positions.
First, review the track and tenure status. Prioritize confirming whether it is a Tenure-Track position or if tenure has been granted, as these are key indicators of stability and academic standing.
Second, refer to the official website of the institution. Verify titles, research tracks, and employment status through the official pages of their affiliated university or research institute; do not rely solely on business cards or email signatures.
Third, comprehensively assess academic impact. Consider factors such as fellowship status, publications and citations, leadership of major projects, and whether the candidate has served as an independent PI. Note that "Professor" titles are rare in the UK; "Reader" and "Senior Lecturer" denote senior roles, so do not underestimate candidates based solely on their translated titles.
